Graphic novelist Thi Bui and acclaimed poet Bao Phi deliver a powerful, honest glimpse into a relationship between father and son - and between cultures, old and new.
Unlike many other anglers, Bao and his father fished for food, not recreation. A successful catch meant a fed family. A Caldecott Honor Book that Kirkus Reviews calls "a must-read for our times," A Different Pond is an unforgettable story about a simple event - a long-ago fishing trip. As a young boy, Bao and his father awoke early, hours before his father's long workday began, to fish on the shores of a small pond in Minneapolis.
Between hope-filled casts, Bao's father told him about a different pond in their homeland of Vietnam. Thi Bui's striking, evocative art paired with Phi's expertly crafted prose has earned this powerful picture books six starred reviews and numerous awards.
Between hope-filled casts, Bao's father told him about a different pond in their homeland of Vietnam" Every child feels different in some way, but Thuy feels "double different. Thuy walks home one winter afternoon, angry and lonely after a bully's taunts. Then a bird catches her attention and sets Thuy on an imaginary exploration. What if she could fly away like a bird?
What if she could sprint like a deer, or roar like a bear? Mimicking the footprints of each creature in the snow, she makes her way home to the arms of her moms. Together, the three of them imagine beautiful and powerful creatures who always have courage - just like Thuy.
In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years. What were we put here to accomplish? What should we value? What is truth, anyway, and how might we recognize it? The process of writing, Saunders reminds us, is a technical craft, but also a way of training oneself to see the world with new openness and curiosity. A Swim in a Pond in the Rain is a deep exploration not just of how great writing works but of how the mind itself works while reading, and of how the reading and writing of stories make genuine connection possible.
In this book, readers will discover the plants and animals that make up the rich, interconnected ecosystem of a mountain pond. Over the pond, the water is a mirror, reflecting the sky. But under the pond is a hidden world of minnows darting, beavers diving, tadpoles growing. These and many other secrets are waiting to be discovered When the boy and his father are waiting to catch fish only crappies, not really a great fish to eat but they are excited and happy to get them , the father sometimes speaks of the Vietnam War which he and his brother both fought.
Vietnam has been a discussion topic this fall and winter. A good reading comprehension strategy for this book would be asking questions. Why is there only a bare bulb in the kitchen? Why does father have crooked teeth? Why are they happy to catch crappies? Why do they have to fish for food now that father has two jobs?
What would be different about having to fish vs. What actually is the different pond? The children will generate answers and also additional questions when discussing the story. The story is honest and informative about the Vietnamese refugee experiences after the way — only as far as children are able to understand while keeping the overall book tone positive.
